Music at Christ Church

Sacred music is itself worship and music gives Christian worship a far more noble form. We hope that Christ church is a place where the treasure of sacred music is preserved and fostered with care.

As well as giving glory to God music helps the faithful to be led to that 'full and active participation in the liturgy' commended by the Second Vatican Council.

"Sacred music ... forms a necessary or integral part of solemn liturgy" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1156).

"He who sings prays twice"(St.Augustine, Ennar. in Ps. 72.1)

Christ Church has had a long musical tradition - Alfred Deller sang in the choir here before moving to Canterbury and later gave concerts (eg April 1972). Walter Goss Custard was organist here.

We actively encourage outside groups, musicians and orchestras to use the church which has a fine acoustic. We are particularly glad to offer Christ Church to local and to young musicians as a resource to use and enjoy.

We have enjoyed visiting choirs from Switzerland, students from the local Hastings and Rother Music Centre, concerts by Hastings Philharmonic choir, University of Sussex Chamber Choir, Hasting Chamber Choir, Opera South East and other groups from the surrounding area and from London.
